GSF2012: Hungry for Justice

London - 26th June 2012

One in seven of the world's people will go to bed hungry tonight.

We all have to eat, and we live in a world that has enough  food for everyone. Yet access to food is scandalously unequal. One billion people are hungry, and a further billion do not get enough vitamins and minerals.

GSF2012 will explore what has gone wrong with the global food system? How can it be transformed to enable everyone to eat well, in the face of unprecedented challenges posed by a changing climate and a rapidly expanding population? And what can we do about it?

GSF2012 Learning Objectives

GSF2012 will enable your sixth form students to become Peer Educators, returning to your school to teach:

1. Why do one billion people go hungry when the world has enough food for everyone? Students will explore some of the many social, economic, political and environmental factors that combine to leave people short of the food they need to lead healthy, productive lives while many people in the world’s richest countries throw away nearly a quarter of the food they buy.

2. How does the world’s food system need to change in order to eradicate food insecurity in the face of enormous global challenges? Students will explore some of the challenges presented by a growing global population and a changing climate, and the economic, social and political changes needed at local, national and global levels to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition.

3. How can people in the UK act to improve food security and tackle the poverty that underlies it? Students will be empowered to act – and to enable others to act – to make a positive difference to the vulnerability of some of the world’s poorest people to hunger and under-nutrition.

What people say

"The Global Student Forum provides an excellent opportunity for 16-19 year olds to speak out and be heard.  We will be listening carefully to what they think about the important issues facing us all as citizens of today's world."
