Media Partnership Challenge
Each year, GSF schools rise to meet the GSF Media Partnership Challenge – to take their message out beyond the school gates into the wider community through appropriate use of local and national media.
Media Partnership Challenge 2010
Former child soldier Ben Okafor has written for us a special song which explores some of the reasons why 72 million children across the world miss out on even a basic primary education.
Our challenge to you is to write your own verses which express your view, and sing them to the special backing tracks in which Ben will join you for the chorus.
The process is simple:
1. Watch Ben tell his story and sing his song (see preview above):
- Download the video of his story and song
MOV | WMV | (help)- Download the video of the song only
MOV | WMV | (help)2. Download the following to help you create your lyrics:
- Idea cards (PDF) - These real-life stories will inform and inspire you.
- Lyrics worksheet (PDF) - This worksheet will give you a structure.
3. Download the special backing tracks.
- Backing track for three verses (5 min 24 sec)
MP3 | WAV | WMA | (help)- Backing track for one verse (1 min 41 sec)
MP3 | WAV | WMA | (help)4. Write your own verses to the song and video yourself singing your lyrics against the backing track.
5. Upload your video to anywhere you like on Youtube - then click on the title of your video in Youtube and you will see a button labelled <embed> which enables you to "Get video embed code" (Youtube provide some help if you can't find this). Copy that code and...
6. Register your video on the GSF site using the online registration form which will ask you for your video embed code plus a title for your version of the song.
7. Keep looking for your song on our special page www.globalstudentforum.org/videos. The first level of judging happens every week and is open for any entry from anyone in the world. If your song is short-listed it will appear on this page (if it is particularly highly commended by the judges it will be showcased by appearing at the top)
8. Tell your friends about www.globalstudentforum.org/videos so they can watch your video (and add to it's youtube viewing figures)
9. Watch out for the results of the additional final judging of entries from students of schools in UK. This will take place soon after the challenge closes - on 31st Dec 2010. The judges will take into account the viewing figures for each shortlisted video as they look for the one that communicates most clearly and effectively the importance of Universal Primary Education - helping the listener to understand why so many children miss out on education, the impact this has on their lives, and how the world could be a more just and sustainable place if everyone was able to go to school. The prize for the winning entry is a day in a professional studio with Ben Okafor - recording your version of his song.
Media Partnership Challenge 2009
The subject of GSF2009 was child mortality, and Jon Snow challenged the students to create a concept and a storyboard for a short film about the reasons why 9 million children across the world die from preventable causes before their 5th birthday. Out of all the entries, the students from Kesteven & Grantham Girls' School won, and they were supported by a team of film professionals to turn their concept into reality.
