Our story

Over the course of 2019 and 2020, student unions, organisations and movements from around the world, have been discussing how to cooperate in a more structured and strategic way.

Those exploratory discussions, supported by the Open Society Foundations and the 100 Million Campaign, have been essential for building the relationships and identifying the shared values that have formed the foundations for our cooperation. From them has emerged the Global Students Forum.

In July 2020, we have formed a Steering Committee to take on the political leadership of the organisation. In the second half or the year we established Rules of Procedure, Membership Guidelines and a set of strategies aimed at streamlining the work of the organisation.

At the same time, we have entered into discussions with Education International to agree on a hosting arrangement for the first three years of our existence.

In January 2021 we employed our first staff member and entered into the hosting arrangement with Education International by March 2021.
