Around the world, students experience cities in unique ways. We search for affordable housing, navigate public transport systems, build communities, study, work, volunteer, and imagine better futures. Yet too often, conversations about the future of cities happen without the voices of students.
The Global Student Forum is launching a new publication, Students Imagine the Future City, and we invite students from around the world to contribute essays, reflections, stories, and personal visions exploring what sustainable, affordable, inclusive, and democratic cities should look like in the future.
We are looking for contributions that answer questions such as:
- What is your dream city?
- What challenges do students face in cities today?
- How can cities become more affordable and accessible?
- What role should sustainability play in urban development?
- How can cities foster community, wellbeing, and belonging?
- What would you change if you were designing your city from scratch?
We welcome a wide range of perspectives and formats, including:
- Essays
- Personal reflections
- Opinion pieces
- Narrative stories
- Letters to future generations
- Creative non-fiction
- Vision papers
Submissions may draw on personal experiences, local realities, community initiatives, or broader visions for the future.

Selection
A review panel will select contributions based on originality, relevance, diversity of perspectives, and quality of reflection. Selected contributions will be featured in the final publication, and authors will be recognised as contributing authors.
Authentic Voices Matter
While digital tools may be used for spelling, grammar, or translation support, the use of artificial intelligence to substantially generate submissions is discouraged. Contributions that demonstrate authentic student perspectives and original thought will be prioritised. We are not looking for perfect essays. We are looking for genuine voices.
Students writing in a second or third language are warmly encouraged to participate.
