The Global Student Forum (GSF) has formally endorsed the development of the Asia Student Alliance (ASA), a new regional initiative designed to strengthen cooperation, representation, and advocacy among students and student organisations across Asia.
Approved by the GSF Steering Committee, the initiative seeks to address a longstanding gap in global student governance. While Asia is home to the world's largest student population, there is currently no pan-Asian platform connecting student organisations across the region and linking them to international decision-making processes.
The Asia Student Alliance aims to bring together student unions, national student organisations, and student leaders from across Asia to create stronger pathways for collaboration, capacity building, and representation in global forums, including those related to education, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation.
"Students across Asia are shaping the future of education, democracy, and society, yet their collective voice is often underrepresented in international discussions," said Jacob Blasius, Executive Director of the Global Student Forum. "The Asia Student Alliance represents an important step towards ensuring that students from across the region can engage more effectively with one another and contribute to global conversations that affect their lives and futures."
As part of the decision, the Global Student Forum will serve as an anchor partner to the initiative, providing institutional support, access to international networks, communications channels, and technical infrastructure to assist in its development.
"The Asia Student Alliance is about creating a platform where students from across Asia can connect, learn from one another, and work together on shared challenges and opportunities," said Falit Sijariya. "By strengthening regional cooperation, we can ensure that Asian students are better represented in global discussions and that their perspectives help shape the future of education and society."
The initiative has already attracted support from organisations including the Commonwealth Students' Association and the Commonwealth Youth Council, reflecting growing interest in creating stronger regional structures for student participation and representation.
The Global Student Forum emphasised that the Asia Student Alliance will be developed in accordance with GSF's democratic principles, governance standards, and commitment to representative student voice. The initiative will initially operate as a network, with its future development guided by participating students and organisations across the region.
Through this endorsement, the Global Student Forum reaffirms its commitment to strengthening student representation in all regions of the world and creating new opportunities for students to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their education, communities, and futures.
